In 2014 the International Permafrost Association (IPA) and the Climate and Cryosphere project (CliC) initiated a process to seek input on the definition of research priorities in the field of permafrost science. As many as 359 researchers from 37 countries submitted research questions and it is now time to collect your opinion on the relevance of the questions that were submitted. Questions were submitted by individuals primarily active in the fields of geomorphology, ecology, engineering and infrastructure. 79% of them had a PhD and 53.8% of them had more than 10 years of experience in permafrost research.
The survey consists of 347 questions organized in 20 categories. Please complete the permafrost survey, by 20 December, at http://www.surveygizmo.eu/s3/90050886/prp. . For any questions please contact Ylva Sjöberg, CliC fellow (ylva.sjoberg@natgeo.su.se) or Hugues Lantuit, chair of the PRP Core Group (Hugues.Lantuit@awi.de).

At the recent workshop in Varese it was decided to move ANTPAS from an Expert Group to a Research Program. So what is a Research Program? Scientific Research Programmes (SRPs) are major international scientific initiatives coordinated by SCAR, with the focus to addressing scientific questions that will require sustained efforts over 6-8 years. ANTPAS will do well within this, since it addresses crucial questions on Antarctic soils, permafrost environments, as well as the active layer. Furthermore, ANTPAS collaborates extensibvely with the biological sciences, since fauna and flora find their niches within Antarctic soils (as well as other environments, of course). AS such, ANTPAS can, as an SRP, address major, priority scientific issues of global or fundamental importance, at the cutting edge of the science, that will require substantial field-work and/or observations in the Antarctic to be successful. More on the SCAR guidelines on establishing am SRP is available here.
Abstract submission to Polar2018 has been extended to 12 November. The conference features 65 session that fall within 12 categories. Submit your abstract here. When you submit your abstracts, have a look at the four sessions either chaired or convened by ANTPAS members. When you submit your abstract to those sessions remember to mention ANTPAS in your abstract. We hope to see you all in Davos in 2018!
Are you thinking of attending Polar2018? Then join the Facebook group created by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), which provides useful information on accommodation and travel to and from Davos. Also don't forget to submit your abstracts by 1 November!
Are you a member of ANTPAS or work in any of the fields and topics that ANTPAS focuses on? Are you planning on attending Polar2018? Then consider submitting your abstract to the four sessions listed below. You can also have a look at all the sessions or the session overview. Abstract submission is open until 1 November, with a fee of CHF 30 applicable to each submitted abstract.
Sessions members of ANTPAS are chairing / involved with: CR1: Permafrost: connecting measurements, monitoring, and modeling ANTPAS member who is co-convening this session: Gonçalo Vieira CR2: Title Permafrost landforms in the two Poles as possible Mars analogue ANTPAS member who is convening this session: Mauro Guglielmin BE9: Life distribution and responses to environmental changes in Polar ecosystems ANTPAS member who is convening this session: Nicoletta Cannone EN6: Reconstructing past environmental change in the Polar Regions ANTPAS member who is co-convening this session: Marc Oliva Day 2 of the ANTPAS workshop focused on intense and insightful group discussions and strategy meetings on the future role of ANTPAS and on how to allow ANTPAS to go from an Expert Group to a potential Research Program under SCAR. Results of these discussions will be made available soon, so watch this space!
ANTPAS would also like to again express their gratitude to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) for making funds available, not only to hold the workshop but also to enable a number of students and emerging researchers to attend the workshop. A list of the grant recipients is provided below. Grant Recipients Fabiana Canini, Tuscia University, ITALY Benoit Faucher, University of Ottawa, CANADA Christel Hansen, Rhodes University, SOUTH AFRICA Filip Hrbacek, Masaryk University, CZECH REPUBLIC Jenna Knox, Rhodes University, SOUTH AFRICA Tebogo Masebe, Rhodes University, SOUTH AFRICA Dan Morgan, Vanderbilt University, USA Tanya O'Neill, Univeristy of Waikato, NEW ZEALAND Liezel Rudolph, University of the Free State, SOUTH AFRICA Nicola Wilmot, Rhodes University, SOUTH AFRICA The ANTPAS workshop started on 4 October at the Insubria University in Varese, Italy. The day was a resounding success, with attendees presenting on a variety of topics, representing multiple disciplines. The day started with a presentation on the Italian Antarctic program (PNRA), given by the Director of Research at PNRA, Antonio Meloni, followed by a presentation by Jerónimo López-Martínez, the ex-president of SCAR, on the role of research programs within the SCAR strategy. The three sessions of the day reflected the interdisciplinary nature of ANTPAS, having presentations on dating techniques, remote sensing applications, landform mapping, weathering processes, atmospheric drivers of ground thermal dynamics, microbial studies, biological investigations, as well as permafrost modelling. Posters were on display throughout the day and the day ended with a dinner attended by all delegates. The finalized program to the upcoming ANTPAS Workshop, to be held at the Insubria University in Varese, Italy on 4 & 5 October, is now available! Also have a look at the general information, book your accommodation at the Hotel Ungheria and to pay the workshop registration fee. We hope to see you in Varese soon!
The next European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP5), will be held from June 23th to July 1st 2018 in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France and abstract submission to the conference is now open. For more information on the 26 sessions, process of abstract submission, and general information on the conference, please have a look at the conference website.
Abstract submission to the upcoming POLAR2018 conference is now open! POLAR2018 will be held in Davos, Switzerland from 15-26 June. The conference, incorporating the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), will combine scientists both Antarctic and Arctic research. There are numerous sessions available on the cryosphere that abstracts can be submitted to so don't forget to submit your abstracts by 1 November.

How do I become a member?
Anyone can become a member of ANTPAS and even better, the membership is also free of charge! Simply complete the membership applications form and we will add you to our email list.
HOW CAN ANTPAS HELP MY RESEARCH?
You can list your project(s) as one that contributes to one of ANTPAS objectives. In order to have your project considered as an ANTPAS project, you should send a request by email to the co-chairs with an abstract of the project objectives and expected outcomes.
HOW CAN I LINK MY PROJECT WITH ANTPAS?
The Steering Committee is able to provide a letter of support to project proposals showing excellent quality and clearly linked to ANTPAS objectives. An abstract of the project, with clearly stated objectives, including the list of project researchers and the top 5 publications by the team should be sent to the Steering Committee for evaluation, so that a letter is prepared.
HOW DO I ACKNOWLEDGE ANTPAS SUPPORT?
A reference to ANTPAS should be included in the acknowledgements in the papers to be published. If you are presenting at an ANTPAS-organised event or one that is affiliated with ANTPAS, or have received funding from ANTPAS to present your work at any event, please include the ANTPAS logo and SCAR logo in your presentation.
IS ANTPAS INTERNATIONALLY AFFILIATED?
ANTPAS IS an Expert Working Group of SCAR. SCAR fosters international collaboration and engagement and is an International Council for Science (ICSU)-affiliated body. The ICSU is a non-governmental organisation with a global membership of national scientific bodies and International Scientific Unions.
